I am sheltered

Be warned. Read entire article here before linking...

I know I lead a sheltered existence. I have never had to witness first hand, or second hand, the atrocities of war, killing, murder... I usually try to avoid things that upset me. Maybe that is weak, maybe I recognized that, and that is what compelled me to follow this link. I found it from an image I passed while surfing around for a good image for a blog post of mine.

This is one of the most disturbing images I have seen. It makes my stomach turn, and tears well up in my eyes (at work).

The picture is gross and sad. But you know what it reminds me of? Those anti-abortion billboards from college. Roping you into believing the worst of things and exploiting unusual circumstances. In the article there's not a caption to the picture and there's no mention in the body regarding the child. Without discounting the validity of the article's content I have to ask, What's the picture really of? Are they (picture and article) truly related? After reading it I feel that the image only shocked me into reading the article. I believe that was the desired effect, to get attention. Personally, I am disappointed, disgusted and angered when I come across this type of propaganda. I believe there are other ways of gaining awareness.

Katherine, I agree fully. As a matter of fact, I only read part of the article because of the picture too. And you are correct, there is no proof of connection between the article and the child. It made me think of those same billboards on campus against abortion.

My point was not to draw attention to the subject matter, but more for me to express what the picture made me recognize with myself. Namely that I am a spoiled human being, relatively speaking.

Reference Tony Pierce's advice on his how to blog rules # 3, 11, and 24.

I'm not sure if an apology is in order. I certainly wasn't trying to overlook your feelings/comment on your subject, I was merely adding my own sentiments. I have to say as I read some of your commentaries you seem to be persecuting yourself often for the privileges you have as an American. Is that true? What do you think? Or maybe I'm misunderstanding completely.

With great power comes great responsibility... it is not so much that I am persecuting myself, just that I am trying to be aware (in a Buddhist sense) of myself and think about life in the rest of the world.
